One of the challenges of being a mum is the time and energy you devote to the wellbeing of another tiny person, the other is the understanding of your role and purpose as a caregiver-- to find that balance between being responsible, but also yielding control and trust to the Creator. It's easy to fall into the mindset of fretting about every small detail- from feeding to sleeping to cutting them micronails.. robbing yourself of the joy of each day. Also I've found that with recommended routines, schedules, methods, techniques of child-rearing at the back of your head, it's hard to remember that each child is different, and to be thankful for general health and the opportunity to be a parent. No not the gushing waterfall type but just enough to know it broke n not make a mess! <br />So we manage to contact my mum before she leaves Chicago ( the last flight out before last weeks storm!) and had a kind friend pick her up.. And host her for 2 nights while k n I stayed at hospital. <br />At 3pm I was 1 cm dilated so was labor was induced ( oh no, gives stronger contractions) <br />After a bunch of contractions and my labor coach and I trying to make it thru, the doc checked again and At 2 am I was 5 cm ... I.e probably quite some hours to go to get to 10cm <br />It was a good time to opt for an epidural! <br />So we did and both k n I promptly fell asleep from mental exhaustion n all the excitement. 7am Wednesday- we made it to a grand total of 6cm! 1cm after 4 hours?? Anti climax ... <br />More induction drugs.. If we don't get to 10 cm in 4 hours chances are we need a c section. <br />Baby heart rate drops so the drug is reduced.. And good news by 11am or so .. We are at 8cm. It took another 4 hours to get to 10cm, and by the time doc said we were ready to push-- we were ready! it wasn't just the waiting.. Not much happening on the dilation front, so I don&#39;t think I&#39;ll be giving birth too too much before the due date. In the evening, hubby and I decided to go out for dinner at a japanese restaurant (where I sadly eat cooked food while watching him eat sashimi). The last time we came, the boss lady gave us free ice cream-&quot;for the baby&quot;,she said (we&#39;ve had quite some free food &quot;for the baby&quot; since becoming pregnant- all from restaurant/food stall boss ladies). <br /> After we had ordered, the boss lady came over to say hi to my tummy, and then she asked what hospital I was giving birth at. I told her and she exclaimed something, then introduced us to the couple at the next table. It turns out that the man at the next table worked at the hospital I had mentioned... and he asked me what clinic/doctor I was seeing... and it turns out I was going to the clinic that he started, which is a group of 6 doctors. I see a different doctor each time I go (that&#39;s the system here, you don&#39;t know who will be delivering your baby, just depends on who is on call) .. but I hadn&#39;t met him before because he didn&#39;t do deliveries ( I guess the boss gets to skip the late night shifts etc). So anyway, it was a cool coincidence, meeting the doctor that we read/hear about at our clinic, plus he gave me the OK to eat raw fish from a good source (like the restaurant we were at) and said we could call him if we had any pregnancy-related problems. Really nice couple!<p /> Later on the boss lady introduced us to her husband, the chef behind the sushi counter, and it turns out they have christian services (in japanese) at their restaurant on Sundays (the restaurant is closed on sundays)... and then they invited us to their house  when summer comes round, when they apparently have a concert series on their property (this is pittsburgh, a large property is not unthinkable) performed by professional musical friends. According to the restaurant website, they own many animals (chickens?) in addition to normal dog pets in their home- kind of bizarre! They also said something about making grilled seasonal fish in summer- I&#39;m not sure if that was at their place, or at the restaurant. In Singapore, I guess we get to see fireworks once or twice a year, but here fireworks come out pretty often-- to celebrate the start and end of summer, spring, independence day, christmas, random community day-- pretty much any event you want to light! Well, as my hubby puts it, the last couple of months of life weren&#39;t funny (at all)!  I was throwing up pretty much most of the time, and hung around long enough at the desk and in the cyberworld to finish my work... before going back into a horizontal, or worse, a 90 degree position bent over the toilet bowl! I&#39;ve come to appreciate deeper bowls, they have less of a backsplash when your stomach contents come hurtling out. <br /> So, life is much better now, I have some energy back and some digestive powers back... it&#39;s all good and I can type smiley faces again :) <br />The reason of course for the weeks of tummy upsets and fatigue is that we will be having a kid in 4 months God willing! It is finally sinking in, thanks to ultrasound technology (you get to see that there really IS an organism living in your tummy) and the fact that I&#39;m feeling better in general. It&#39;s an initiative that runs in several US cities, and is mostly volunteer and church- based and funded. </p><div> This pair of volunteers stood out to me, the lady had been volunteering for more than 20 years with Meals on Wheels, and her recently retired husband is now volunteering as well. I&#39;m not sure how many shifts they deliver a week, but they are in the same age group as some of the people who have requested meals. We followed a track (that the deers were using too, judging from the hoof marks) and got some cardio and strength training in...panting and trudging through knee-high snow. More than 2 feet of it, snow up to your thighs. Highest snow fall in 7 years!<br />The power went out last night for the whole estate, so there was heating or cooking in the neighborhood. And for another 180,000 houses in the state. The snow falls on trees, and the trees/branches collapse on power lines, and power goes out. Yes, unheard of in tropical singapore :) <br />&nbsp;We have a small gas stove (For steamboat) and managed to heat some water and make breakfast with that. <br />After K. had been shoveling the driveway for about an hour, our neighbor Maurie (who shares the same driveway) came out to talk to him. Maurie is about 70? and lives next door with his wife. When we are not around, he helps to shovel our side of the driveway, but today he had some physical issues that didn't allow him to help shovel. So K. worked hard to move a huge pile of snow covering both our driveways. <br />Soon, two of our neighbors (that we don't know) came over to help K, strong and tall people with lots of experience shoveling. They cleared the driveway in about an hour, sweating buckets, and one of our neighbors who had already done his driveway drove out and got coffee for everyone, and we didn't even know him. He also offered to share his groceries with us if we did not have any.<br />It was really nice of them all, and they even did it in good spirits, joking and chatting all the way. Shoveling is really tiring (i did it for less than an hour, k for about 4 hours), so its really generous of them to help so many people despite the cold and discomfort to themselves. <br />After we were done with our driveway, we noticed an elderly lady shoveling down the road. Another elderly gentleman was helping her, and at the rate they were going, I don't think they would have been able to clear their driveway any time soon with slower movements and not being able to shovel big amounts of snow. We went up to help them, and another young couple came and joined us, even before they had done their own driveway. We managed to clear it pretty soon since there were 4 of us and later went on to shovel the young couple's driveway. We noticed that the 2 other neighbors, who had helped us, were also helping others clear their driveways. Many hands make exponentially lighter work. <br />Soon, the power came back on at about 11am and you could hear people shouting down the road that the power was back. <br />We are back indoors now, getting hot drinks and showers. (K says his hands are shaking from all the shoveling) It is a blessing to have been helped and also to be able to help, and also to have electricity. <br />Upon getting back, we found that friends in different areas had called us. The boy was taller than her, DEFINITELY wider and bigger than her, in terms of his limbs and his tummy. The question is, WHY IS SHE CARRYING HIS BAG FOR HIM?? <br />Firstly, he is obviously not a young child, probably 14 years old or more. He shouldn't be letting a much older woman carry HIS bag of books for him! <br />Secondly, he is SO much bigger than his maid!! One look and you can tell that the bag is too big for her to handle comfortably. <br />What kind of upbringing is this?! <br />I'm not even talking about bringing up some NOBLEMAN or GENTEEL guy..but its common sense right? In this case where physicality matters, carry your own bag,<i> especially</i> if the option is letting a much weaker and smaller person carry it! <br />I mean, its not like he was BUSY...or SICK..or ABSENT....&nbsp; he was walking the same route from the bus stop home, next to the maid... HELLO? <br />Between the two of them, its obvious he needs more exercise than her! And he would have much less difficulty carrying the bag. (I have nothing against chubby people or thin people) <br />I don't think having a maid is right or wrong, there are pros and cons. <br />But its how the maid assists the family that can be beneficial or not.. it can blind us to the necessity to do things on our own, to the understanding of effort, humility and kindness. We look only to our own comfort, because we can afford it, because mum and dad says, let the maid carry it for you. Once a habit, it becomes hard to break and this may carry into future relationships, work and life attitudes, in the end it only disadvantages the child. We become unable to see the needs and difficulties of others, even when they are right in front of our faces. Empathy becomes very very low and we don't even realise it, and yet this lack of empathy and understanding will be felt by friends and people around you. <br />&nbsp; Yes, the maid is paid to work for you, but in this case where you can literally alleviate someone's difficulty AND be responsible for your own items, I don't see why the boy is not doing it. <br />I don't think this is the fault of the boy or of society. It is the choice and principles of his parents. They want to save him the effort of carrying his own bag (so he can study better?), and are willing to pay and save him that trouble. The food is fresh, there are enough prawns and herbs in the fresh spring rolls, the place does not smell like bleach (unlike another vietnamese joint that we've quit going to), and the service is decent (see previous comment).<br />&nbsp;The first time we went, I peeled the roots off the bean sprouts before dipping them into the boiling hot beef soup (I just don't like them), and was pretty impressed that today, they had peeled the bean sprout roots off for us. These flowers yield a tea that tastes less bitter and less grassy... perhaps this is what you call fresh-tasting tea? I&#39;m no tea connoisseur, but it tastes much better and &quot;gentler&quot; than ones I&#39;ve had before. Its a nice end to the evening, especially when its chilly! It reminds me to be thankful for the kindness of good friends, and also encourages me to take time to reflect on the day ;) <p /> I put the flowers and bits into empty satchets because there are tons of little bits (which I&#39;m sure are edible anyway). It is a historic building, and feels like it (while having modern amenities).<br /><br />2) Free internet&nbsp; ( a modern amenity)<br /><br />3) "crazy mocha" cafe - italian sodas and coffee :)&nbsp; (see above)<br /><br />4) glimpses of antiquity- the ornate sitting well with the modern<br /><br />5) helpful, friendly staff - one of whom gave me a quick tour when he saw me photographing, and showed me the "original' tile floor they found (and have now preserved) while doing renovations at the library.<br /><br />6) great book selection - new stuff old stuff , books are well-featured on tables<br /><br />7) lots of comfy chairs, loungers, comfy leather arm chairs, rocking chairs... and good reading lights placed next to them (how considerate is that!) ..did i mention its comfy?<br /><br />8)&nbsp; borrow 50 items - DVDs, CDs, books, magazines...<br /><br />The only thing missing now is a library cat! We had it for about a week, when he finally broke down and asked for white rice instead. The best compromise we came to was once a week brown, mixed grainy rice, and even then, I should not tell him when it was coming. For this reason, he sighs with relief after he sees whats in the rice cooker/ rice bowl when we went back to white rice. I decided not to &quot;torture&quot; him and now we have white rice again. <br /> Now I know how my parents felt when they tried to make us kids eat brown rice when we were growing up. And we either ate very little, or ate very slowly. (My brothers still don&#39;t eat brown rice I believe) <p />Fragrant white rice sops up the flavour and sauce of the asian dishes you are eating, brown rice + grains changes the taste of the meal in a different way. <br />http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Women-Dont-Get-Old/dp/0385339976<br /><br />serves 4, but easily halved. <br />This dish comprises of rice with 3 different "toppings"- eggs, minced meat and vegetables. <br />Ingredients<br />Eggs: <br />1 tbsp oil <br />6 eggs<br />2 tbsp sugar<br />pinch of salt<br />Beef: <br />1 tbsp oil <br />1 lb ground beef<br />2 tbsp sake<br />1 tbsp sugar<br />1 tbsp soy sauce<br />8 snow peas, trimmed. <br />4 cups of cooked rice<br />Cooking<br />Eggs: <br />Mix the eggs and sugar and salt,<br />Fry in oiled saucepan on medium heat. <br />Keep scrambling the eggs in the pan for 2 mins, or until eggs are cooked and in small pieces. <br />Beef: <br />Add all the ingredients into a saucepan on medium heat. <br />Saute till thoroughly cooked. <br />Vege: <br />Boil on med- high for 1 min or till just cooked. <br />Drain and cut into small strips. <br /><br />Divide the three "toppings" between 4 bowls of steaming hot rice, as neatly as possible... nice home-cooked meal in less than 30 mins (depending on how fast u like to cook ;) <br />eat well and be healthy! It was rainy most of the weekend, so we didn't do much except stay in and have (lots of) warm apple cider! We also did a walking tour of "downtown" Bedford with a very humorous and enthusiastic guide. Bedford is famous for its springs that were believed to have curative powers (about 150 years ago), and was also a summer resort area that important people came to visit, to cool down and avoid hot smog in the city (probably before they invented aircon). The resort has since been restored and was really pretty without being too ornate. We also met some friends up here, which was really cool, as was the weather. <p><br /></p></div><br /><p><a past sunny but cool Sunday, we went to the park to toss a frisbee with some friends. It was a lovely day, not burning hot but sunny and windy. There were 6 parents, 5 kids and us 2, and we managed a pretty decent game (i.e. enough running around to constitute exercise) considering most of the participants were either over 33 or under 12.<br /><br />After 2 hours of chasing the small plastic object, the sun began to set at 8.30pm and we opted for dinner together at one of our favourite fast food chains - Sonic. It's pretty unique in the sense that you either order and eat in your car in specified lots, or you park, order via an intercom and eat at the patio-like area. No indoor seating, meaning in winter, its mostly a drive-in/drive-thru place.<br />But today was a nice enough day to sit al fresco, which was also suitable for a pack of happy kids to speak at their prefered decibel level.<br /><br />Being not too humid, we weren't too disgusting for post-exercise people, and made a last stop at another friend's home nearby. She graciously fed us Mango cream cake of sorts and drinks. This bears mentioning because the week before the same smelly group of people had descended upon their home to have burgers and hotdogs (since they were grilling anyway). This is what happens when you live near the park (popular weekend joint), a popular hamburger joint and somewhat in the middle of all your friends.<br /><br />Arriving home and taking a shower, there was a distinct smell of salt (fortunately not something else), and the hubby says he found salt crystals on his arms. While the basics of good photography are what make a shot, the details count a lot as well, from equipment to the actual shoot, props, getting baby comfy... to the post-processing. Heather is really a post-processing whiz, and is an accredited Adobe Expert! I thought that was pretty amazing...I'm very inspired to speed up my digital workflow haha. David has a different approach to shooting, which balanced out the course in a really cool way. The workshop was held in David's home, talk about working from home! I liked that both photographers have a balanced and passionate perpective of life, valuing their family and faith in inspiring ways. Very cool day. The book has a great cover photo, and as with most pet books I read, I started with the last chapter.<br />These books are usually written after the aforementioned pet has died, and so they usually end with the very sad but timely death of this pet... so to get the worst part over with, I read the end first...then I feel like I can enjoy the rest of the book more.<br /><br />This was a pretty good read, I finished it in a couple of hours and came away with a slightly bigger impression of Iowa as a major corn producer and also small town / farm life as was described in this book as a backdrop to this cat story. I don't know if its pronounced like 'kailan' the vegetable, but it has the same spelling and surely someone in the network station would have done their research.<br />So, it looks to be intentional. It was a lot of fun and laughter as dogs (mostly labradors) charged after a "bone", leaping off a platform into a pool. The dog that leaps the furthest (off the platform) wins. Some dogs ran after what was thrown, only to stop at the edge of the platform and sniff the water.
